Abstract

To meet the mounting demand of the road users for the provision of more detailed information in a more expeditious manner, the Hanshin Expressway Public Corporation (HEPC) is contemplating the introduction of image processing type spatial sensors capable of measuring the condition of traffic flow spatially unlike the conventional ultrasonic vehicle detectors, into its traffic control (TC) system. As part of its effort to upgrade the information collection function of the Intelligent Transport Systems, the HEPC conducted the verification testing of an image processing type spatial sensor consisting mainly of a number of industrial television (ITV) cameras on a route in service in the road network of its expressway. This paper reports the results of the field verification testing conducted by the HEPC with each ITV camera mounted overhead to a lighting pole on the median strip of a roadway. (A*)
