One of the major application areas of ITS solutions is in the field of managing the operation of vehicle fleets. Although it seems to be quite clear that this is one of the main markets, today most of the applications are designed by SMEs (small and medium enterprises) which provide individual and mostly tailor-made solutions to their clients. This paper contains original data based on recent market studies. From these data, strategic recommendations are derived regarding the structure and type of fleet management products, their distribution channels and the marketing efforts required to enhance market penetration. Furthermore, new types of products are proposed which are based on the latest technological developments to facilitate market penetration at the lower end of the market.
