Abstract

THE INITIATION AND PURSUIT OF THE PROGRAMME OF PHOTOGRAMMETRIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF MAIN ROADS WERE DESCRIBED IN PAPERS 250 (1966) AND 693 (1970) PRESENTED TO THE THIRD AND FIFTH ARRB CONFERENCES RESPECTIVELY. SIGNIFICANT FURTHER PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN THAT PROGRAMME IN AREAS INCLUDING: THE TRIANGULATION AND ADJUSTMENT OF PHOTOGRAMMETRIC STRIPS; THE USAGE OF COLOUR AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SUNDRY HIGHWAY ENGINEERING PURPOSES; THE APPLICATION OF ORTHOPHOTO TECHNIQUES TO HIGHWAY PROJECT PLANNING; THE GENERATION AND USAGE OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAMMETRIC DATA; THE OPTIMISATION OF LOCATION USING OPTLOC; CADASTRAL APPLICATIONS OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY; THE ASSESSMENT OF EARTHWORK VOLUMES MOVED IN CONSTRUCTION; THE USE OF INFRA-RED AND MULTI-BAND REMOTE SENSING TECHNIQUES FOR THE LOCATION OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS; PLUS PERIPHERAL INVOLVEMENT IN OTHER AREAS. THIS PAPER UPDATES THE PICTURE OF THE RELEVANCE OF PHOTOGRAMMETRIC TECHNOLOGIES TO THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF A HIGHWAY AUTHORITY IN AUSTRALIA. (A).
