Abstract

If present trends in urbanization and increasing use of private automobiles in cities continue, the great advantages of the automobile for individual users may be offset by growing disadvantages to the urban community as a whole. The advantages and disadvantages of existing public and private transportation modes in cities are examined, and the implications of existing ridership trends examined. It is concluded that new modes of urban transportation combining the best features of private autos and public transit should be developed. A number of new urban transportation concepts are described and compared to the private automobile in terms of traveller appeal and community planning considerations. Implementation times for the new modes are estimated and recommendations are made for a step by step process of experimentation and innovation. Immediate action is urged, to maintain both travel mobility and the quality of living in our cities as they continue to grow rapidly in size.
