The population is changing. Some developments will probably influence the mobility and traffic safety of the elderly and disabled persons. These are: a) demographic trends like the substantially increasing proportion of the elderly in the population; b) the increasing number of elderly and disabled persons living alone; c) the growth in the scale of retail, banking, services and so on: people will have to travel greater distances to fulfil their daily needs. This paper describes the expected consequences of these trends on the mobility and traffic safety of elderly and disabled people. Measures for dealing with the negative consequences of these trends are summarized, particularly in the field of town planning.
