This article points out some factors suggesting that road transportation will maintain an important role in the future even though there are problems such as pollution and oil shortage. The automobile will have a better fuel efficiency, electronic components and lighter material. Alternative fuels are also an important matter. As growth of population will continue in urban areas more efficiency will be needed to cope with congestion in urban areas and in the western countries, while a considerable increase in road length is necessary for the agricultural and economic development of the third world.
