Abstract

This article presents some of the economic and technical considerations for the design and development of future vehicle detector systems. Detector accuracy requirements, installation cost, location, and roadway environment are used to develop the preferred vehicle detector characteristics. In addition, a description of vehicle detectors, considered for development by the Bureau of Public Roads, and some of the current vehicle detector concepts under development are presented.
