Abstract

The goal for the Polish National Road Safety Improvement Programme (GAMBIT) is to reduce the number of killed over the next five years to the level of 6 000 people. Three mutually supportive intermediate goals are: (1) common implementation of road safety improvement measures; (2) acquiring public acceptance for road safety activities; and (3) establishing the basis for an effective and long-term policy in the area of road traffic safety. The paper presents the underlying philosophy of the programme and the development process. In a final part of the paper some of the problems to implement the programme are pointed out.
