Abstract

The GAMBIT team produced a draft version of the final GAMBIT report. This report discusses this draft. It is explained in the report why there has been an increase in the number of road accident casualties in Poland in recent years. A politically sanctioned National Road Safety Plan can make a significant contribution to improving road safety. The final GAMBIT programme could serve as a sound basis for this Polish Road Safety plan. The road safety improvement should be situated in the long-term perspective of development towards `sustainably safe' road traffic. This perspective (20 years or more) should include concrete short-term goals. It is suggested to publish a `Annual report on road safety' report on road safety' every year. Road safety improvement is an organisational and management problem in which the government role is crucial. Active actors are needed and opportunities have to be created to make it attractive for them to pay attention to the road safety field. It is recommended to create a network of well-educated professionals, together with interested citizens, peer groups and politicians. The report was presented at a special seminar in Gdansk, March 21-23, 1996.
