Abstract

The policy of the Dutch national government is to improve traffic safety and living with traffic. Some measures of the government aim at the maintenance of the permitted driving speeds on the Dutch road network. At first information was given and speed controls were done, but these measures showed not the effects wanted. One of the other possibilities is influencing the driving speed by technical provisions in the vehicles, such as electronic speed regulators (cruise control), speeding indicators and speed limiting systems. The government considers now to introduce speed limiting systems in busses and lorries, and in a later stadium also for cars. On the long term speed limiting systems, which can be influenced from outside the car, can be developed. However, there should be a favourite public opinion in the acceptation for the introduction of such a system. Results of a study on speed limiting systems about their use, their possibilities, their limits, and experiences (a.o. by the drivers) are outlined.
