Abstract

A measuring instrument was developed for evaluation of road design-elements, as applied on the demonstration routes for slow traffic at the hague and tilburg. Behavioural observations were carried out on four locations by means of film and video recording. Also some simple measurements were made by observations from the recorded pictures. The film and video material was analysed quantitatively to record the behaviour of road users, in terms of path chosen, path deviations, velocity, velocity changes and interactions with other road users. Both techniques, film and video, gave comparable results. The application of video is preferable, especially with respect to the costs. In this case equipment has to be developed for the direct analysis of static video pictures. Quantitative analysis remains an expensive and time-consuming method.
