Abstract

The modal split between various forms of land transport in Japan (aircraft, boats, private or public cars, buses or trains) and the energy consumption of each is described. Details are provided of the methods introduced to save energy, by encouraging use of public transport, improving freight transport efficiency, and research into more efficient materials or alternative energy sources. The government actively encourages public transport.
