Abstract

This section of the analysis presents an overview of the PENDANT database. Overall there were 1110 crashes in the database involving 1884 different vehicles of which 1558 were PENDANT case cars. The database also contains information on 2370 occupants. However as with all databases there is a proportion of missing data. To be a valid PENDANT case there had to be a minimum of one car made after 1998 involved in the crash of which 20% of all cases had to have MAIS 3+ injuries. For each partner up to 10% of all cases could be collected as pedestrian accidents. There are 70 pedestrians involved in 68 accidents in the database. There were approximately similar numbers of crashes for each day of the week although there were a slightly higher proportion of serious and fatal crashes for both weekend days. The time of crash peaked during the afternoon and early evening. Where the MAIS was known 22% of crashes were MAIS 3+, however this varied across countries; 10% in Germany and Spain and 37% for Britain and Finland. 35% of crashes were serious or fatal and for pedestrians this rose to 65%. The vast majority of crashes occurred on single two-way carriageways and in daylight. There were 1481 drivers, 546 front seat passengers and 327 back seat passengers, the majority of which were male with a peak age between 20-29 years. As age increases the proportion of males involved in a crash decreases. In all countries more men are involved in crashes than women. A larger proportion of elderly people risk dying or being seriously injured in a crash and therefore a smaller proportion come away from a crash unharmed compared to younger occupants, with the exception of 20-29 year olds who have higher proportion of fatal and serious accidents compared to other drivers under 60.
