Abstract

This article gives a review of road injury accidents in 1990. Fuller details are given in the main tables. Part 1 comprises seven tables which depict 1990 casualty numbers. The numbers are also given for 1989 and the average for the years 1981-1985. For comparison the resultant percentage changes are also shown. Table 1a shows the overall casualties and these are further disaggregated by road type in Table 1g. Tables 1b-1f concentrate on data for certain types of road user. Casualty rates per 100 million vehicle kilometres, or, in the case of pedestrians, per 100 thousand population, are also shown. The 1990 traffic figures, and therefore 1990 casualty rates, are provisional. The average for the years 1981-1985 has been adopted as the base figure for the national target for reducing the number of road casualties by one third by the year 2000. Part 2 of this review article comprises tables of data on the cost of road accidents, drinking and driving, and motor insurance claims. These topics have been included in previous editions of RAGB, usually in the form of full length articles. Such articles do not appear in this year's report but the background data are included in this review. For more comprehensive information on these topics please refer to the 1989 edition of Road Accidents Great Britain (see IRRD 846337). Annually, Road Safety Division of the Department of Transport publish a Highways Economic Note, which covers in more detail road accident costs.
