Abstract

Attempts were made to introduce Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for environmental impact analysis application. This research can be considered as a contribution to the current endavours in this field where research examines the possibility for formulating environmental impact analysis from road traffic noise within a GIS system. A prototype has been developed which can evaluate and assist decisions concerning highway noise pollution in The Netherlands, integrating the current environmental assessment procedures in the Netherlands within ARC/ORACLE GIS system. Predictions obtained from application of this prototype are compared with those given from consultant offices. The result is a system which shows a high degree of correlation with existing control data for the same study area. Some differences do however remain which need for further studies.
