Abstract

This issue of Current Topics in Transport includes over 90 abstracts of some of the published literature (reports, conference papers, books and journal articles) on some of numerous transport applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). These systems often interfaced with existing databases, are now being used for the decision support in a wide range of transport planning activities. Examples and case studies of the applications abstracted here include: GIS in traffic monitoring, congestion control, network analysis, highway safety management, freight transport distribution, accident analysis, public transport accession route planning, planning, highway design, highway maintenance management. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 1993 and 1996. Much of the relevant English language literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Road Research Documentation (IRRD) database. The previous edition of this title was Current Topics in Transport 28, covering articles added to the database from 1991-1993.
