Abstract

This paper considers the progress made by the Strategic Highway Research Progress (SHRP) as it nears the end of its research funded program in March 1993, and looks ahead to the future. The Long Term Pavement Performance Program (LTPP) and the implementation of SHRP developed products will be transferred to the US Federal Highways Authority (FHA). The implementation activities under the FHA will be in 7 areas: 1) field trials and demonstrations; 2) training; 3) audio-visual materials; 4) new test equipment; 5) acceleration of standards adoption; 6) adaptation to changing conditions; and 7) commercialization. The LTPP will continue for 20 years, in 50 US states, 10 Canadian provinces and in 11 other countries. 11 other countries. Analysis of the LTPP database to produce useful tools for pavement assessment has been started by SHRP but must be continued by the highway profession.
