Abstract

In recognition of the increasing numbers of walking and cycling projects being submitted annually by road controlling authorities, the government has been steadily increasing the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) funding allocated to walking and cycling. In February 2005, central government launched its strategy to advance walking and cycling in New Zealand, entitled Getting there û on foot, by cycle (Getting there). The Ministry of Transport has been charged with leading this work and is working collaboratively with central government transport agencies, a wide variety of sectors, and regional and local government to plan for implementation of the strategy. The implementation planning process is now well underway, with the first annual action plan and three year strategic plan due in December this year. To this end, a number of groups have been, or will be, established to see this process through. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E213900.
