In the world of road safety research it is customary to describe the nature, size, and severity of road accidents in terms of direct consequences (numbers of accidents, road deaths, in-patients, and such like). However, until now, not much attention has been paid to consequences of the injuries themselves that were incurred in a road accident: injury consequences. The describing and bringing into picture of such injury consequences also appears to be almost virgin territory. The research project "injury consequences" has been set up to produce a picture of the nature, size, and severity of injury consequences. The ultimate goal is to set up in the Netherlands a registration of injury consequences. The present study is the first phase of this project. In this, an inventory has been made of the classifications and registrations of injury consequences that already exist. Their usability for a Netherlands registration system has been evaluated. This
