Abstract

The Danish Road Institute has participated in a project financed by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency to evaluate alternative uses of glass waste. A literature search showed that glass cullet has been used as asphalt aggregate and as unbound material in base layers and fill. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical properties of glass cullet from Danish collection schemes. The particle size distribution for crushed glass was compared with that of US glass. The bearing capacity of the glass cullet was examined using CBR tests. The low bearing capacity observed was a result of the equigranular nature of the glass. Use as a non-bearing fill material would not cause technical problems. The recycled glass could also be used as a filter gravel in drainage applications.
