The Gloucester Safer City project in the UK is described. The history and strategy of the project, which began in the 1980s, are outlined. Under the Safer City initiative, Gloucester was awarded £5 million from the Department of Transport for road safety engineering. Co-operation between Gloucester County Council and other organisations in the City was very important. Speed management was a major part of the project. Examples of measures taken to reduce the speed differential by 2 mph on main routes and mixed routes, to lower people's anxiety about speeding and for the introduction of a safety campaign are presented. These include reducing the road space by introducing cycle lanes and hatching, constructing gateways, designing unique camera signs, introducing pedestrian refuges, public involvement and the formation of two citizen's juries. Following the Safer City initiative, serious and fatal casualties were down by 38%.
