Abstract

The formal goodness-of-fit test is commonly used as the sole criterion for the selection and evaluation of log-linear models in multilevel contingency tables. The formal test for the comparison of a model of interest against the unrestricted alternative has been overemphasised in practice. A completely restricted model is proposed to provide an additional reference point for model evaluation, and general model comparison tests are presented.
