Abstract

This paper describes the design of a Global Positioning System (GPS) based emergency vehicle location and communication system. The complete system can be installed inside a vehicle and the pilot system consists of a GPS, a laptop PC, and a mobile phone. On emergency, the user presses a key on the keyboard and as a result of this the current geographical co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) of the vehicle, together with a pre-specified emergency text, is sent to an emergency service centre via the on-board mobile phone. The system described offers many advantages and can be used on the road, in the sea, or for any other emergency purpose.
