Abstract

This paper explores the themes that concern UK family doctors when considering the ability of their elderly patients to keep driving. Increasing age brings increasing physical problems and medication can affect the driver's aptitude. Dementia causes particular difficulties as the driver is unaware of his or her own failings. The practice of re-assessing drivers for the renewal of their licence is considered in comparison to other European countries. The safety of the general public needs to be balanced with the requirements of the older population to keep driving.
