This paper was presented at the session titled `New technologies in traffic engineering'. Operation of Light Rail Transit (LRT) in urban shared right-of-way attracts ridership and is an effective solution to transit. However, it introduces the potential for collisions to occur between motorists, pedestrians or bicyclists and the train. This paper looks at the Los Angeles Metro Blue Line (MBL) and its efforts to reduce grade crossing accidents with the use of photo enforcement. Cameras were installed at grade crossings and used to photograph vehicles entering installed grade crossings after initiation of lowering of the gate (A)
