Abstract

This chapter provides and overview of the transport situation in Greece. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) road, b) rail, c) air and sea, d) public transport supply and demand and e) car ownership and use. Travel patterns are considered in more detail with statistics provided for a) number of trips, b) modal distribution, c) trip purpose and d) trip time. Greece's policy making structure is described and its main problems and policies outlined.
