`Green light' for Oregon : a national CVO project prototype.

Abstract

The article describes Oregon's Green Light Project, which will begin to automate commercial vehicle operations (CVO) in the state of Oregon, USA. Green Light will be the initial project in Oregon's intelligent vehicle highway system - commercial vehicle operations (IVHS-CVO) plan; it will be a prototype model for the USA, and link with several other projects. Its vision is to make the Interstate I-84 corridor from Oregon to Utah a seamless transparent border for heavy-vehicle systems by 1997. The largest part of the project will enhance the preclearance system of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), which is the world's only totally operational automated system of this type. It enables commercial vehicles, which meet necessary legal safety and tax requirements, to bypass ports of entry and weight stations. It integrates a wide range of technologies, including: (1) weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales; (2) automatic vehicle classifiers (AVC); (3) various sensors; (4) an automatic vehicle identification (AVI) system using one-way or two-way transponders; (5) variable message signs (VMS); and (6) the supervisory system computer.
