How will the ageing population contribute to increasing mobility ? In 2007 the Netherlands Institute of Transport Policy (KIM) conducted a study to examine the effect of ageing on mobility. This article gives an overview of the most important results of the study. Future scenarios for the Netherlands predict a continuing growth in mobility. According to the scenario with the highest growth people aged 65+ account for nearly half the total growth in mobility. This is mainly due to an increase of the number of people in this group. A larger number of elderly stil! holding a job, more elderly in the higher income brackets and more elderly owning a car are also important contributing factors. The future elderly will also have more out-of-home activities, will travel more after the morning rush hour, and a have a different preferred location for living. These behavioural changes can result in an additional growth of the total mobility with almost 3 percent. (Author/publisher)
