Abstract

A model is suggested to describe the growth and dissipation of a traffic jam in a single lane of freeway traffic. The situation is similar to that described in the classic M/G/1 queue, but more general, in that the vehicles are assumed to have finite, variable lengths. Various random variables are investigated, including the number of vehicles delayed, the total delay and the length of freeway affected.
