Abstract

This article describes the success of the first decade of the Transportation Professional Certification Board. Since its creation in 1996, almost 2,000 people have obtained the credential as a professional traffic operations engineer. Building upon the success of this certification program, TPCB has continued its mission to provide transportation professionals withobjective measures of their knowledge by offering three additional certifications: traffic operations practitioner specialist, traffic signal operations specialist, and professional transportation planner. The objectiveof all these programs is to raise the bar by garnering knowledge on peer-defined, job-related domains and to provide an objective assessment of applicant's ability to apply this knowledge through passing a comprehensive examination. The Institute of Transportation Engineers supports TPCB's efforts by offering a variety of training materials to certification candidates.
