Already twenty years ago attempts were made to entrench a nationwide maintenance strategy for existing roads and structures – as for example bridges. Therefore nowadays there exist procedures and corresponding systems – PMS and BMS – are in regular use. Due to the good experiences with these systems it seems necessary to handle the neglected transportation assets in a management system separately. To accomplish the data basis necessary for this purpose was the main task of the present research project. Therefore literature concerning the maintenance costs, service life and the number/amount of components was analyzed next to a nationwide survey. As one main result, transportation assets, which are appreciable for an Asset Management, were defined and divided into single aggregates. In a next step, maintenance measures for the transportation assets had to be defined, partly different from existing formulations. In combination with the collected service life and the number of components the calculation of the measurement costs is possible also for the transportation assets. Nevertheless, there is still a necessity for further research. This concerns mainly the improvement of the existing data basis and the implementation as a computerized program. (Author/publisher)
