Abstract

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) has shown to be the platform for mobile voice communication worldwide. The inherent data capabilities such as SMS and normal data calls provide an attractive platform for the integration of ITS applications such as automatic emergency calls, traffic message services and even pre- and on-trip travel planning. The upcoming demand on higher data rates and lower access delays was also foreseen within ETSI and forced the introduction of new GSM bearer services. The article shows how the variety of GSM services can be used to deploy ITS applications in the near future on proven technology with respect to a long lifetime towards UMTS.
