Abstract

Part 1 of the Guide to Road Design provides an introduction to the guide as a whole, defining its status, purpose and areas of application and describing the functions and content of each of its nine parts. The context of the road design process within each of the different methods of delivery of road projects are discussed, as are the various aspects of road design philosophy and principles. The concept of a set of key design considerations is introduced, directing the reader to a full presentation of these considerations in Part 2 of the guide. Part 1 concludes with a discussion of the nature of the road design process and descriptions of its typical elements. (Author/publisher)
