Abstract

This paper describes the Guidelight system which is used to prevent crashes at road bends and intersections. The system gives the driver prior warning of both an approaching vehicle and the roadway geometry. The fluorescent beacons placed alongside the road clearly indicate roadway alignment. They can also warn the driver that a car is approaching the bend in the opposite direction. Icons and messages are also displayed at intersections, to warn a driver of any vehicle that might be approaching that intersection from another direction. The experiments to test the system are described. The experiment to test the Guidelight experiment was carried out by 18 subjects. The experiment to test the intersection warning equipment was carried out over two months, with 200 employees of the Highway Industry Research organization acting as subjects. The opinions of the subjects as to the efficacy of the systems were recorded.
