Abstract

This survey of tunnel design guidelines was performed as part of the EU SAFESTAR (Safety Standards for Road Design and Redesign) project. The goal of the survey was to find out what standards exist on motorway tunnel design, as an input to driving simulator studies that fill possible knowledge gaps. The survey was supported by a literature review on effects of motorway tunnel design on driving behaviour (See ITRD E203504). The reference for ideal tunnel design was determined by means of an inventory of the design guidelines for motorways. Standards used in motorway design were used as a starting point. In addition, the small amount of specific design guidelines for tunnels, specifying more lenient design criteria, were also described, as well as a number of guidelines that apply only to tunnels. Based on this inventory factors that need further investigation were identified, followed by a preliminary set-up for a simulator experiment. (Author/publisher)
