Abstract

These guidelines describe urban safety management (traffic calming) and how best to implement it. The concept of safety management is defined first. This is followed by a method for developing objectives for local area safety schemes. The importance of consultation with the public is emphasised, and methods of so doing presented. Criteria used for choosing the best scheme for any particular area are also presented, as are methods for designing local area safety schemes, and the methods for implementing such schemes and monitoring their effectiveness.
