This paper has presented a short resume of research work on the Gulf Freeway surveillance and control project. Descriptions of the research activities have necessarily been brief. The serious student of surveillance and control work is invented to study the publications indicated in the accompanying bibliography, which provides detailed coverage of the research studies and results. The progress to date has been extremely gratifying and there seems to be little doubt that extremely beneficial results in improved freeway traffic flow can be realized through the utilization of freeway control and surveillance. It is the author's belief that such systems will become a common tool of the traffic engineer in the near future.
