Gully grates and bicycle safety.

Abstract

Despite the growth in motor vehicle traffic and the lengthening of duration of peak floes (particularly for the journey to and from work), the use of bicycles by serious commuters has persisted. Other road users, including those restricted to wheelchairs, have vehicles whose speed and wheel characteristics are similar to those of bicyclists. This paper reviews the bicycle safety of gully grates, and presents a proposed definition of the term bicycle safety as applied to grates, which was evolved during a recent internal study.
