Abstract

IRIS is a system for individual, dynamic travel information for public transport. Using the mobile phone, the traveller has easy access to information before, during and after the journey. IRIS is aimed at a broad spectrum of users. The emphasis is not so much on the development of new technologies, but more on the integration of existing technology or technological components that will become available in the near future. Another important characteristic of IRIS is step-by-step implementation, in co-operation with market parties: starting simply and continuing to build on the foundation of proven successes. The main functions of IRIS can be described in terms of three keywords: (i) individual: the client (with his/her individual preferences) is known to the system; (ii) mobile: the system tailors the information to the precise, up-to-the-minute position of the traveller; and (iii) dynamic: the travel advice takes account of up-to-date services. The basic principle is that the traveller is in charge at all times: information is only provided if the client requests it. This report gives the findings of the IRIS feasibility study, carried out in 2000 by a consortium consisting of TNO, OC Mobility Coaching, telecom providers (Ericsson and Telford) and transport companies (Syntus and HTM). The principal conclusion was that the development of IRIS is both feasible and desirable, provided that a number of preconditions are fulfilled. These preconditions principally concern guaranteeing the integral nature of the information services (from door to door), the organisation and co-ordination of the various corporate processes aimed at acquiring the necessary dynamic data and guaranteeing that the traveller remains the focus.
