Abstract

About 90% of all road accidents involving children (of Primary school age), whether cycling or walking, occur within built-up areas. A third of the accidents occur at times when children are on their way to or from school, the remaining two thirds occur when children are outside playing on the road or travelling to and from friends' houses, shops or other destinations. In this publication general recommendations for providing a safe residential environment for children are made. Also, a series of checklists have been added to this manual which may be of use when finalising planning for maintenance, re-structuring or even new construction work in a particular area to ascertain whether or not the recommendations for a child-friendly environment have been adequately taken into account.
