Abstract

The revised edition of the handbook on the safety aspects of highway layout covers a number of areas not included in previous editions. It is intended to offer guidance on traffic planning and operations problems, and also when reviewing traffic management policies for correcting hazardous traffic situations. Information on the safety aspects of various highway situations are presented in the following sections - cross sections and slopes; bridge design; signing; highway traffic barriers;small drainage structures; railroad grade crossings; gores; lighting; skid prevention; construction and maintenance operations; and, special design considerations.
