Abstract

Handicapped people in street environment are divided here in three main groups: 1) persons with walking differences, 2) wheelchair users and 3) blind or nearly blind persons. Wheelchair users have by far the greatest difficulties to move in street environment. Steps, curbs, dumps, uneven road surface, gradient and crossfall on sidewalks create such problems for this group that they only to a small extent are able to move in the environment on their own. Solutions of some problems concerning the physical street environment are given.
