Abstract

This guide covers safety structures minimising the injuries when vehicles leave the road, i.e. the implementation of a limited severity zone by altering dangerous obstacles and layouts on the road side. The zone's layout called recovery (shoulder or emergency lane) is evoked, but not developed. The guide presents the knowledge and know-how in this matter. Written for those in charge of managing, improving, or designing roads, it should allow them to appreciate the level of safety on road sides, propose corrective and preventive solutions, which are appropriate and effective, prioritised according to stakes and constraints.
