Abstract

This paper describes the STAIRS (STandardisation of Accident Information and Registration) project, funded under the Fourth Framework research programme. The project will develop a harmonised procedure for the in-depth investigation of crashes for the purpose of improved vehicle crashworthiness and safety regulations. Key areas to be addressed include a core dataset; the national crash population; data quality; data processing and exchange; statistical methods for data analysis; terminology and ethical considerations. An associated project (CAREPLUS) concerns the harmonisation of national databases within the CARE system. (A)
