Abstract

Speed measurements are carried out continuously at the Swedish national road network. This report summarises the findings for the measurements of speed in July during the year 1983 and the years 1986 to 1991. July is of special interest since it is a holiday month. Furthermore, during the summer of 1989 and 1990 the speed limit was reduced from 110 km/h to 90 km/h. Some of the results are that the yearly speed development of the summer vacation traffic mainly follows the trend of the whole year during the period of study. In 1989 when the speed limit was changed from 110 km/h to 90 km/h, speed reductions were observed even on the 70 km/h and 90 km/h roads. During 1990 and 1991 the speed limits have gradually returned to the level that prevailed before 1989, resulting in higher speed levels for all road types. But the speed on motorways with the 110 km/h speed limit is in July still lower than it was before the two years of experiment.
