Abstract

A new camera system, equipped with a charge coupled device (CCD) detector was used to take direct photometric measurements on the road by capturing the road image. The system was tested in a laboratory with a floor of reflectance similar to a road surface. This image can be displayed on a personal computer and shows the related luminance distribution and a very realistic image of the illuminated road. In this study images of different headlamps were analysed and the road luminance distributions compared with the illumination distributions expected from the simulations.
