Abstract

This paper discusses data acquisition for traffic control in Romania with reference to heavy goods vehicles. Current methods included periodic traffic census counts, traffic surveys and vehicle weighing. Systems were to be improved in order to automate data collection with the implementation of telematics and to acquire additional information on the aggressivity of heavy traffic. Automatic vehicle classification and weight in motion (WIM) technologies were recommended. The improved system comprised the existing network of traffic counters and an additional network of WIM equipment and inspection stations to enforce the law. This system should be a component of a future intelligent vehicle-highway system in Romania.
