Abstract

Efforts of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to study the role of the helicopter in emergency medical service are documented: (1) a report which provides information on the economic problems of emergency ambulance services and provides guidelines which planners can use in de developing economical and efficient emergency ambulance service, a chapter of which is devoted to the helicopter ambulances; (2) the Emergency Care Systems Demonstration Projects in Pennsylvania, Nebraska, University of California at Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. (Council of Governments), City of Detroit, Arizona State University, Metropolitan Inter-county Council of Minnesota, and Mississippi State University.
