Abstract

This report contains a compilation of the various advances made in Sweden which have contributed toward the development process. It also describes where efforts have been directed to improve the design of a whole family of protective headgear comprising skiing, ice hockey and bicycle helmets, helmets designed specifically for young children and riding helmets. It contains an historical overview, a compilation of certain accident statistics, a review of the use of helmets, specifications and requirements and European standardisation efforts and campaigns. The report may well be of use to organisations based in EC/EFTA coutries as an aid in future development programmes and information campaigns designed to increase the use of protective headgear, thereby reducing the number of head injuries which are caused in accidents.
