Abstract

The space for traffic in the Netherlands constitute 2.5-3% of the total land space outside the built-up area. Roads split up the free space and deteriorate the vegetation and fauna, the historical and natural landscape and its function cannot be preserved, while urbanization is promoted. Roads are being planned through proposed landscape parks. An active transport and traffic policy is necessary backed by research, to find alternatives against further road construction.
